5 of Cape Town’s iconic walking trails to get those feet moving

Spending some time outdoors after a long week spent cooped up in the office, classroom, house or any indoor space can be really therapeutic, especially when the sun makes an appearance.

Getting some much-needed dose of vitamin D and getting our feet moving is a great way to release the week’s tension, ease your mind and re-centre yourself for the upcoming week.

And the best part is that it’s free! You can choose to walk around your neighbourhood when it’s safe to do so, but if you have some extra fuel in the tank to spare, Cape {town} Etc compiled five great spots to drive out for a chilled walk:

Signal Hill Saddle

Just past one of Cape Town’s favourite hikes, Lion’s Head, lies a contour path along the road up to the Mother City’s prime sunset spot, Signal Hill.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll and watch the city views blend with the natural hues of the mountain as you make your way up the hill. The contour path has a gradual incline but is not too hectic, which makes this trail perfect for furry friends, kids and those embarking on a new fitness journey.

Pro tip: Begin your walk approximately half an hour before sunset so that when you reach the top of the hill, you’re greeted by picturesque views of the sun kissing the ocean’s horizon.

Alphen Trail

The Alphen Trail is possibly one of Constantia Valley’s most popular green belt walks. The scenic trail winds along the Diep River to Constantiaberg Mountain, allowing one to walk on either side of the river at times, with a number of bridge crossings.

It’s a beautiful walk filled with lush grass, trees, and beautiful skies, and people usually take their dogs and families on walks here.

Muizenberg to St James

Even though this walk is enjoyed by many, we often don’t have the time to make the trip a reality! This stunning paved shoreline walk will have you wanting to return every free moment you get.

But don’t feel the need to rush through it. Take some time to soak in the gorgeous views, and if your tummy starts talking, then rest assured that there are many eateries and coffee shops in the vicinity to reward yourself for the day’s walk.

Newlands Forest Contour Path

The lush, tranquil aura that Newlands Forest radiates is like both music and therapy for the soul. Take a stroll or enjoy a light trail run that’ll get your heart pumping in no time. Even though it’s a fairly long walk, you’ll find yourself so mesmerised by the natural surroundings that the distance won’t matter.
