See the Knysna Heads
The Knysna Heads are a pair of sandstone cliffs which separate the Knysna Lagoon from the rest of the Indian Ocean and remain a popular spot.
In the past, the Knysna Heads were a popular resting place for seamen, while today, they are a must-see landmark along the Garden Route.
When visiting the Heads, you will be able to experience breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding mountains.
The Knysna Heads are divided into Eastern and Western parts.
The Eastern Head is accessible by car and offers access to beaches, beautiful viewpoints and quaint cafés, while the Western Head is only accessible by boat from the Knysna Waterfront.
Cruise into the sunset
Knysna’s calm waters are ideal for boating and several water sports which include kayaking, kite surfing and canoeing.
On a relaxed boat cruise, you can admire the Knysna sunset while enjoying a glass of champagne.
As the Knysna lagoon is rich in animal life, it is the ideal area for bird spotting, so you’re sure to catch the sight of some sandpipers and kingfishers.
Whale watching
Since Knysna is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, one of the area’s most popular activities remains whale watching. The destination also has several viewpoints available from which you can catch the glorious sight of whales.
However, if you are interested in a closer encounter, there are different whale watching cruises available through travel companies and bookings can be made in-person or online.
The period between July and December is migration season for the Southern Right and Humpback species of whales, which is the ideal timeframe to observe these large sea creatures.
Hiking at the Garden of Eden
A good hike is healthy for the mind, body and soul. The Garden of Eden hiking trail is located next to the N2 in Knysna, with its trails leading to a wooden walkway through the leafy forest and over beautiful streams.
The hiking trail is not too physically demanding and is thus suitable even for beginners, and there is also a wheelchair-friendly walkway.
Finally, the Garden is also equipped with benches and tables.
Furthermore, information regarding indigenous flora and fauna is readily available, making the overall experience an informative one.
