Historian and textile artist Kaya Bryce is proud to present her debut exhibition, ‘What Are You?’. The show is designed to immerse the audience in the sight, sound, and feel of exploring and understanding identity.  Starting with text and imagery, the exhibition culminates in a powerful performance of dance and textiles followed by a group discussion anchored by community members and with the participation of the audience. The aim is to unpack and digest the experience together, and share stories that will help deepen our understanding of the relationship between identity, knowledge and each other.  The conversation revolves around two key aspects of identity: communal histories and the impact of our environment, and the idea that these factors are always present and informing our encounters with ourselves and others, and that they shape our sense of self in profound ways. In a place like Cape Town, which has such a rich, layered, and beautiful story around identity, but also a violent and painful history, it is important to stop and think about what these things mean, and how we relate to ourselves and each other. ‘What Are You?’ is an exhibition that promises to be both thought-provoking and visually stunning.
