Mars and Royal Canin join forces with Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fair Celebration of animal welfare and adoption with fun day

2nd October @ 9:00 am 4:00 pm

Calling all pet animal lovers to come join Mars Petcare and Royal Canin this coming Sunday, 2 October at 20 Molteno Road, Gardens in honour of World Animal Day celebrated annually on 4 October. As a proud sponsor of the Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fair that will take place from 09h00 – 14h00, the two brands want to highlight the importance of pet adoption with the ambition to end pet homelessness in South Africa. Entry is free!   The Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fair will ensure a fun-filled day for young and old with the aim to promote the adoption of animals from registered animal welfare organisations, who are members of the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF).   “We are very excited to partner with the Paws-A-While team on this event as its main objective is aligned with our Petcare purpose which is to create A Better World for Pets™. As a global petcare company, the world we want tomorrow is one where no pets are homeless. Tackling this issue helps both animals and people – bringing the benefits of the human-animal bond to more people and ensuring every pet has the sustained care and nutrition that they need to thrive,” says Tumi Masekela, Corporate Affairs Director at Mars Multisales Southern Africa.   Mars Petcare has been serving the health and nutrition needs of the world’s pets for over 85 years and its portfolio includes household brands like Royal Canin, Pedigree and Whiskas, Iams and Eukanuba.   Making the world better for pets Cape Town   Supported by the City of Cape Town, the well-known Paws-A-While Fairs are held regularly in different regions of the Cape Metropole. The events include food stalls, live entertainment, pet foods stalls as well as toys and accessories, among other things. Fun dog shows are also held with guest judges and appearances.   “Our events have become very popular amongst locals as it encourages a culture of adoption and for people to become involved with or support animal welfare and rescue organisations. It also provides an important forum for animal welfare organisations to raise income and donations. We are thrilled to partner with global petcare company Mars and Royal Canin and look forward to getting more pets into loving homes” says Carolyn Dudgeon, project founder and organiser of the Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fair.   “The Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fair allows for our members which consists of over 20 participating animal welfare organisations to come together for the love of animals, raise funds from their charity stalls, and interact with the public for the day, all while finding loving new homes for many gorgeous animals,” says Karen De Klerk, CAWF Chairperson.   Since the project’s establishment, the fairs have secured 500 successful adoptions and the Animal Welfare Society of SA has reported that the Paws-A-While initiative has increased their adoptions by 100% in the last year.   Making pet homelessness a priority   Earlier this year, Mars and Royal Canin launched the first-ever State of Pet Homelessness Index in collaboration with leading animal welfare experts in order to measure the scale of cat and dog homelessness by country. As the first consistent, methodological measure of pet homelessness by country, the Index identifies local contributing factors and builds insight into critical components that will inform future initiatives to help address this complex issue.   The Index estimates that there are 224 million homeless cats and dogs across nine countries including South Africa. Built on input from across 200+ data sources supplemented with quantitative data on consumer attitudes, the Index ensures a holistic view on pet homelessness. Each country received an overall tally between zero and 10 (where 10 = no pet homelessness exists) based on data collected across three focus areas. The Index currently includes nine countries – the US, UK, India, Mexico, Germany, Russia, South Africa, China and Greece.   Overall, South Africa scored 4.0 on the Index’s 10-point scale with 27% of companion animals in the country being homeless.   “Science tells us that pet ownership brings a multitude of benefits to our health and well-being: from improving our heart health and physical activity to building empathy, aiding development, and strengthening our sense of community. Developing impactful collaborations such as with the Paws-A-While Animal Adoption Fairs and CAWF, we are taking one step forward in ending pet homelessness,” concludes Masekela.   See here for the full State of Pet Homelessness Index report on South Africa.
