Raw, Unfiltered Queer Theatre Comes to KKNK 2026 with MARKUS (en die brandblusser op die derde verdieping)

This show is not a “slice of life”. It’s the crumbs under the toaster.

Emerging theatre-maker Vihann van Rooyen brings an off-beat new solo production, Markus (en die brandblusser op die derde verdieping), to the Vonkprop stage at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) 2026.

A congregation of pubic hair, two lesbian chickens, an erotica-writing Asperger, and a trans fire extinguisher…now all we need is a double adapter. The piece offers an intimate glimpse into the stream of consciousness of a young queer man, Markus Benade, as he processes the last three years of his university life with a fire extinguisher. The show blends observational humour, mime, and physical theatre to create a fragmented theatrical experience that is both unsettling and unexpectedly tender.

With very few physical elements on stage, the performer creates an entire world through imagination, voice, and movement, inviting the audience to fill in the gaps. The result is a fast-paced solo performance that blurs the line between stand-up, storytelling, and experimental theatre.
